Gold Filled vs Gold Plated: What's the Difference, and Why It Matters

If you have ever bought a gold piece that looked beautiful for a few weeks and then started to fade at the edges, you have already met gold plating. And if you have ever wondered why two necklaces that look almost identical can be priced so differently, the answer is usually hidden in one word on the label: plated, or filled.

It sounds like a small detail. It is actually the difference between jewellery you replace and jewellery you keep. Here is what is really going on, in plain language.

What gold plated jewellery actually is

Gold plated means a base metal, often brass or copper, with an extremely thin layer of gold bonded to the surface by electroplating. We are talking thin. A standard plating is often around half a micron, and "flash plated" pieces can be thinner still. For scale, that is a fraction of the thickness of a human hair.

That thin skin of gold is why plated jewellery is affordable, and it is also why it does not last. Daily friction, sweat, perfume, sunscreen and humidity slowly wear the gold away. Once it goes, the base metal underneath shows through, the piece tarnishes, and for some people the exposed metal causes skin irritation or a green mark. Plated jewellery has its place for a trend you want for one season. It was never built to be worn for years.

What gold filled jewellery actually is

Gold filled is a different thing entirely, even though the name sounds similar. It is a thick layer of solid gold mechanically bonded to a brass core under heat and pressure. The gold is not sprayed on. It is fused on, and it stays.

In the United States, where the standard originates, a piece can only be called gold filled if the gold layer makes up at least 1/20th, or 5 percent, of the item's total weight. That makes the gold layer roughly one hundred times thicker than typical plating. When you see "14ct gold filled," it means that bonded outer layer is genuine 14 carat gold.

The honest part, because we will always tell you the honest part: gold filled is not solid gold. There is a brass core inside. What you are getting is a serious, hard wearing layer of real gold that, with normal care, lasts for years and often decades without flaking or wearing through. It sits just below solid gold in quality, and far, far above plated.

Why elsket uses 14ct gold filled

When we started elsket, we made one rule early. Nothing leaves the studio that we would not be happy to wear ourselves for years. That single rule quietly decided a lot of things, and the findings were one of them.

Every clasp, every ring, every chain and connector we use is 14ct gold filled. Not plated. It costs more, and it is harder to source, and we chose it anyway, because the whole point of a handmade piece is that it lasts long enough to become yours. A necklace that fades in a season is not handmade to be loved. It is handmade to be replaced, and that is not what we are doing here.

Looking after gold filled jewellery

The good news is that gold filled is low maintenance. A few simple habits keep it bright for a very long time:

- Put it on last, after perfume, sunscreen and moisturiser, so the oils and alcohol do not sit on the metal.
- Take it off before swimming, showering and the gym. Chlorine and heavy sweat are the main things that age any gold.
- Wipe it gently with a soft cloth now and then, and store it dry, away from damp.

Do that, and a gold filled piece will look the way it did the day it arrived for a remarkably long time.

Is gold filled real gold?

Yes. The outer layer is genuine solid gold, in this case 14 carat, bonded to a brass core. It is not solid gold all the way through, but it is real gold you can wear every day.
